Television Lighting Design
Lighting
for television is a specific art – and science. Those lighting
designers who are the industries best are not surprisingly - in
demand by many networks and television programs. The reason for
this is simple: they understand the nuances of how light can be
manipulated and used to make the set – and the actors look
good. They also know how to hide less attractive attributes.
The good news is that light can be expertly controlled in television,
but you need to know the basics. The three primary light characteristics?
Coherence (quality), color temperature, and intensity.

Lighting Fabric and Drapery, Special Considerations for Makeup
Lighting Fabric and Drapery
Lighting
fabric, costumes, draperies and other production elements can be
a challenge, but not if you know the basics.
The
best way to see the effect of your lighting colors on the scenery
is determined using a simple trick. Paint a section of wood or a
flat with the colors used in the scenery. Then experiment using
a small lighting fixture like a 125-watt fresnel and a range of
Roscolux samples. Change the color media in the fixture until you
have the paint effects you want. If you want to take it a step further,
equip the light with a common dimmer, which allows you to see changes
in intensity as well.

Makeup Lighting
Lighting
the actor's faces can be challenging enough. Throw makeup into the
equation, and it becomes even more difficult. The color problems
are usually attributable to the last minute decisions that are made,
that you don’t have time to adjust for. Of course, it's easier
to change color filters than costumes or scenery. Better than this
however is adapting the makeup to the overall color scheme. Here's
a trick: Equip the dressing rooms with color filters that will be
used on the stage. It's simple, and effective and can solve the
problem ahead of time.

Stage Lighting: Automated Fixtures
Automated
fixtures, or “intelligent lighting” for the stage are
different than traditional, stationary illumination fixtures because
they can perform complicated effects and create spectacular scenes.
Of course, it may be more appropriate to call it 'obedient' lighting
because the performance of this type of lighting is really the result
of the skills of the programmer or lighting operator.

Lighting & Production Design
In
film and television, lighting and production design are critically
important. It’s no surprise then that lighting and production
designers work very closely together to ensure that the director's
vision is realized. Without proper lighting, a day time scene could
be too dark or an inside scene too light. In the wrong light, characters
faces could be hard to make out when they need to be seen or specific
twists in the plot could go unnoticed. If you’re reading this
article, you probably have a good idea what lighting design is.
But, what is Production Design and how does it integrate with specific
lighting needs? At its most basic, production design is the creation
of mood and atmosphere through the expressive use of objects forms
and color.

Mechanics of Lighting
To
be an effective lighting designer, it takes a lot of knowledge,
understanding and practical experience. There are many good designers
out there, making a decent living. But, there are only a few great
ones. So, what makes them great? The first question of course is:
what are you trying to light? What's the goal? The designer must
have a good idea about the specific characteristics of the different
lighting fixtures that are available so they can select the appropriate
fixture for the task at hand. Have you taken classes on the physics
of light? Have you studied along side a veteran pro? These are both
good ideas if you want to take your craft to the very highest level.

enough to be able to get the job done on their own. There's just
way too much to consider when it comes to lighting technical - and
practical applications. Consider all of the various items reviewed

Lighting for the Theatre
Stage
lighting is different than any other type of lighting because you
are working with creating or supporting dramatic scenes by using
the special qualities that only light can deliver. A big part of
your job is to communicate emotion by combining the light with human
expression. This is an important task in any production and can
sometimes mean the difference between an audience walking away spellbound
- or disappointed. A spotlight coming on at the wrong time would
ruin a tender moment between the leading man and lady, for example.
By working with the elements of composition, mood, naturalism and
visibility, you can control a significant part of the overall experience.

Concert Lighting Design
Anyone
who appreciates good music - in all its many styles, can appreciate
great concert lighting. Lights can take on a life of their own and
become a central part of the concert experience. Any Pink Floyd
fan can attest to this fact. Every show becomes a music and
light experience. But it wasn’t always this way. It's only
been since the 1960's that this new type of lighting design was
born. The Filmore clubs, both East and West, in New York and Los
Angeles, gave popular music its first permanent venue. This then
led to the concert lighting of large arenas and old music venue
favorites like the Hollywood Bowl. To capture the true essence of
the performance, lights were manipulated to provide greater impact
to stage presence. In the early days, lighting concerts consisted
of the operator actually 'dancing' on a wall of autotransformer
dimmers in time with the music. Primitive, but it got the industry
started.

Lighting Design for Dance
Dance
lighting is a specialized field. Its main objective is to provide
lighting for the human form - in terms of plasticity, interest and
emotional impact primarily. Visibility of the face is a secondary
concern. With dance, side lighting is a main source of illumination.
Front lighting is reserved for color washes or specials. Because
dance involves the entire body, it's critical to have light integrate
with the fluid movements of the performer, or group of performers.
Whether it's highlighting special moves, or helping to create emotional
intensity, the dance lighting designer has an important role to
play. In contrast, theatre lighting is first concerned with lighting
the actor's face and the front lights usually provide the main source
of lighting.

effectively and can be used for general illumination as well. Clamp
lights shine in any direction without taking up a lot of surface
space. What type to use? Halogen and fluorescent lamps because they
provide bright and efficient lighting. Plus, they are relatively
inexpensive.

Lighting for Film
The subject of lighting for film is one that could fill an entire
book. It’s a very important part of the overall film project
and is handled by the best lighting designers in the business. But,
if you're just starting out, or want to know the basics, what should
you know? To start off, lighting a feature is different from corporate
or commercial projects. For a corporate project, we would set up
the lighting first and then place the subjects within it. When lighting
for a feature, you light for the script. This is a good place to
start. But what does it really mean? It really translates to this:
when you get the script, you must read it carefully. If storyboards
are available, make sure you take a look at these too. Get with
the director to talk through the scenes and to determine the feel
and location.
